2025 Super Bowl LIX: Business Aviation Destination Guide
Super Bowl LIX will take place in New Orleans, Louisiana, on Sunday, Feb. 9, 2025. With the high volume of business aviation traffic expected leading up to and following the event, the FAA has announced special air traffic procedures to ensure safety and minimize delays. These procedures will be in effect from February 6, 2025, at 0601 UTC through February 11, 2025, at 0400 UTC.
For detailed FAA guidance, visit www.faa.gov/superbowl.
Special Event Reservation (PPR) Program
A Special Event Reservation Prior Permission Required (PPR) Program will be active for arrivals and departures, including drop-and-go operations, at airports in the New Orleans metropolitan area. This program will run from Thursday, February 6, 2025, 0001 CST to Monday, February 10, 2025, 2359 CST.
Key Notes:
- The current slot program reservations have already begun, and there is a waiting list.
- Once a slot is confirmed, the event fee is due immediately, and these fees are non-refundable.
- KMSY is only accommodating drop-offs (“in and outs”) and will not offer overnight parking.
- KNEW is offering overnight parking.
Airport Options
There are several airport options for Super Bowl LIX operations in the New Orleans area. Each offers unique features and services to accommodate business aviation traffic.
Louis Armstrong New Orleans International (KMSY)
KMSY is the primary airport for the region and operates 24/7. It offers full aircraft services, customs and immigration facilities, and significant ramp space for business aviation. However, KMSY is only accommodating drop-offs (“in and outs”) and will not provide overnight parking. Located approximately 15 miles from downtown New Orleans, KMSY is a convenient choice for operators requiring comprehensive support.
Lakefront Airport (KNEW)
Lakefront Airport is a preferred choice for business aviation due to its proximity to downtown New Orleans, just a 10-minute drive. KNEW offers customs services and a quieter environment for operations. Noise abatement procedures may apply, and extended hours will be in place during the Super Bowl. Additionally, KNEW is offering overnight parking.
Hammond Northshore Regional (KHDC)
Located approximately 45 miles north of downtown New Orleans, KHDC provides an alternative for operators seeking less congested airspace. This airport will have extended tower hours during the event and offers ample ramp space.
Slidell Airport (KASD)
Slidell Airport is about 35 miles from downtown New Orleans and offers a low-traffic option for general aviation. While smaller in scale, it can accommodate various aircraft types and provides convenient access to the New Orleans metro area.
Port of South Louisiana Executive Regional (KAPS)
Situated about 30 miles west of New Orleans, KAPS caters to business aviation with FBO services and ramp space. It is a viable option for operators prioritizing accessibility and efficiency over proximity.
Exemptions
The following flights are exempt from the Special Event Reservation (PPR) Program:
- Law enforcement and public safety flights
- Regularly scheduled air carriers and air taxi operations under Part 380 (Essential Air Service)
Parking Considerations
Due to the anticipated high volume of air traffic, ramp space at all participating airports will be limited. Operators must secure parking reservations in advance through their preferred FBO or Airport Authority. Failure to secure parking may result in denied service or significant delays.
Pilots should also be aware that overnight parking may be unavailable at certain airports due to capacity constraints. Operators are encouraged to plan for alternate parking arrangements at nearby airports if necessary.
Extended Airport Operating Hours
Several airports will extend their operational hours to accommodate increased traffic:
Lakefront (KNEW) ATCT

February 6 | 0700-2200 |
February 7 | 0700-2400 |
February 8 | 0600-2400 |

February 10 | 0500-2200 |
February 11 | 0600-2100 |
Hammond Northshore Regional (KHDC) FCT

February 7 | 0800-2200 |
February 8 | 0600-2200 |
February 9 | 0600-2200 |
February 10 | 0600-1800 |
Houma-Terrebonne (KHUM) FCT

February 9 | 0530-1900 |
Security Provisions
Pilots should anticipate a Temporary Flight Restriction (TFR) in the New Orleans area on Sunday, February 9, 2025. TFRs will limit operations such as glider activities, flight training, and unmanned aerial system (UAS) operations. Pilots are encouraged to check NOTAMs frequently for updates.
TFR information will be published via FDC NOTAMs 3-5 days prior to the event and can be found at http://tfr.faa.gov/tfr2/list.html.
Traffic Management Initiatives
To manage high traffic volumes, the FAA will implement:
- Airborne holding
- Reroutes
- Miles-in-trail restrictions
- Ground stops
- Ground Delay Programs (GDPs)
During a GDP, aircraft must depart within 5 minutes of their assigned Expect Departure Clearance Time (EDCT). If unable to comply, pilots must inform ATC and request a new EDCT.
Important Notes
- Airborne changes of destination to area airports will not be accepted, except in emergencies.
- VFR arrivals may expect lengthy delays and potential holding during peak traffic periods.
Flight Plans
File flight plans at least 6 hours, but not more than 24 hours, prior to departure. Early filing helps ensure Traffic Management Initiatives (TMI) accurately reflect demand and can minimize delays. Duplicate flight plans (same time/call sign) will be removed and may increase delays.
Air Files/IFR Pick-Ups
Air files and IFR pick-ups will not be accepted for flights to/from participating airports, except for genuine emergencies.
Training Flights
Training flights, practice approaches, and student solo cross-country flights are strongly discouraged in the New Orleans metro area. These operations may be limited or suspended during the event.
Airport Status Information
Real-time flight delay, airport status, and program information can be accessed at nasstatus.faa.gov.
Conclusion
Planning ahead is crucial for smooth business aviation operations during Super Bowl LIX. Ensure compliance with all procedures, coordinate with FBOs, and monitor NOTAMs frequently to avoid delays or disruptions. For additional guidance, visit www.faa.gov/superbowl.
