As of January 1, 2024, the Government of Kenya requires nearly all travelers—including those on business and general aviation flights—to obtain an Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA) prior to arrival. This pre-travel clearance system replaces visa-on-arrival options and is now mandatory for non-exempt travelers.

Here’s what business aviation operators need to know.

Who Needs a Kenya eTA?

All passengers on business or private aircraft must have an approved eTA before travel. The eTA is processed online via etakenya.go.ke or through the official mobile app.

Crew members listed on the manifest are exempt if they remain airside. Crew planning to enter the country or overnight must apply for an eTA.

No visa-on-arrival services are available under the new policy.

Exemptions Relevant to Business Aviation

  • Citizens of EAC countries (Burundi, DRC, Rwanda, South Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda)
  • Crew remaining within the airport (listed on manifest)
  • Private aircraft owners refueling only and remaining airside
  • Diplomatic and UN personnel
  • Holders of valid Kenya residence permits or visas

Application Timeline and Documents

Processing typically takes 3 business days, but travelers are advised to apply at least 2 weeks in advance to avoid delays.

Required documents:

  • Passport (6+ months validity, 1 blank page)
  • Passport-style photo
  • Travel itinerary and accommodation confirmation
  • Contact information and payment method

Business travelers must also provide:

  • Company invitation letter
  • Registration certificate of inviting company

Operational Impacts for Flight Departments

  • Ensure all non-exempt passengers and crew have approved eTAs prior to departure.
  • Coordinate eTA compliance with trip planning, CIQ arrangements, and handler briefings.
  • Do not assume crew members are exempt—verify plans to remain airside.
  • Maintain eTA approval documentation for review at both departure and arrival.

How to Apply

  1. Go to https://etakenya.go.ke
  2. Click “Apply Now” and complete individual applications
  3. Upload all required documents and submit payment
  4. Monitor email for approval confirmation
  5. Save or print the approved eTA for all checkpoints
