As we approach the 2024 peak season for business aviation in Costa Rica, operators must be aware of severe parking restrictions at critical airports. This operational update provides crucial information to help you plan your flights and secure parking.

Overview

Peak season in Costa Rica begins in the fall and runs through the end of the year. Find more insights and info inside Feasibility IQ.

The high season in Costa Rica typically runs from late November to early April. However, the 2024 season is expected to face unprecedented challenges, particularly regarding business aviation aircraft parking at major airports.

Key Restrictions

San Jose International Airport (MROC)

San Jose, Costa Rica

  1. Significantly reduced business aviation parking availability
  2. Only seven official GA parking slots
  3. Larger aircraft (e.g., Gulfstream G550s, Bombardier Global 6000s) may face more challenges
  4. Between 10 am and 4 pm GA operations will be restricted

Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport, Liberia (MRLB)

  1. Strict restrictions from December 22, 2024, to January 25, 2025
  2. Overnight parking is subject to space availability
  3. Between 10 am and 4 pm GA operations will be restricted to turn arounds at a maximum stay of 2 hours. Subject to availability.

Urgent Action Required

  1. Submit Parking Requests Immediately: Even for future flights, getting your requests in as soon as possible is crucial.
  2. Provide Tentative Schedules: Send your November-December 2024 flight plans to Universal Aviation Costa Rica.
  3. Plan Early: Book crew accommodations at least three months in advance for stays during high-demand periods.

Additional Considerations

  1. Parking requests for MROC may not be confirmed until November or December.
  2. Airport authorities have discretion in approving or denying parking requests.
  3. At MROC, GA aircraft may occasionally be allowed to park on the commercial ramp, subject to authority approval.
  4. Expect delays in aviation fuel uplifts, lav/water services, etc., due to increased ground activity and priority given to commercial traffic.
  5. We have worked on a contingency plan with the nearest airports to accommodate traffic overflow. Please contact Universal Aviation Costa Rica for further details.

Accommodation Planning

  1. 4- and 5-star crew accommodations average 200 USD per night during high season.
  2. Rates can spike to 400 USD per night during peak times (Christmas to New Year) or special events like fishing tournaments.
