Italy has reopened its borders for tourism, effective June 21, 2021. United States and Canadian citizens are among those allowed in. Here’s what you need to know:

Italy entry requirements for travelers from the United States, Canada & Japan and C List countries (Updated Aug. 31 2021)

Effective August 31, 2021, Italy entry requirements for travelers from the United States, Canada & Japan and who have been in those countries 14 days prior to entry in Italy, have added the requirement of a negative test – valid tests are Molecular test (also known as RNA or PCR test) or Antigen test (also known as rapid test) – done in the seventy-two hours prior to entry into the Country, in addition to the:

1.  Certificate of vaccination or
2. 2 SARS-COV-2 Infection recovery Certification (see below for further information).

Italy Green Pass requirements and details

Italy’s so-called “Green Pass” is designed for people who got vaccinated, recovered or tested in Italy. Anyone who lives in another EU or Schengen Country can simply show the same certificate they use at home throughout Italy, as part of the agreement to recognize each other’s documents. But Italy has also agreed to accept certificates from the following five countries outside the EU or Schengen Zone:

1. United States of America
2. Canada
3. Israel
4. Japan
5. United Kingdom (including England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, Gibraltar, the isle of Man, the Channel islands and British military bases on Cyprus)

The five countries above – plus members of the EU or Schengen Zone – are the only ones whose certificates Italy has agreed to recognize. The Health Ministry says visitors from one of the five selected countries can show their certificates – whether for vaccination or recovery – in digital form or as hard copies. Visitors from the US, for example, should be able to show either their CDC-approved vaccination card or a digital certificate within their state’s official app. However, Italy’s health pass verification app does not appear to recognize QR codes of digital certificates issued outside the EU, so if planning to use a digital certificate make sure that it displays all the information listed above – not just a QR code – and to have a back-up, consider bringing the paper version too.

Vaccination certificate details

Certificate of vaccination are valid if at least 14 days have passed from the second dose (if a second dose is necessary). Vaccines accepted include those accepted by the EMA European Medicines Agency, which are:

1. Comirnaty (BioNtech / Pfizer)
2. Janssen (Johnson & Johnson)
3. Spikevax (Moderna)
4. Vaxzevria (AstraZeneca)

The certificate needs to state:

• full name
• date of birth
• Name and batch number of vaccine
• Date(s) of the jab(s)/swab(s)
• Details of the authority that issued the certificate, such as country’s national health service, ministry of health or local health authorities.

The Certificate should be in at least one of the following languages:

• Italian
• English
• Spanish
• French

Certificates in any other language must be accompanied by a certified translation.

Proof of recovery requirements

Italy will also recognize medical certificates of recovery fro,, Canada, Israel, Japan, UK or the US, as long as they were issued within the past six months. They should contain at least:

• full name
• date of birth
• The date of first tested positive for coronavirus
• Details of the health authority that issued the certificate

All recovery certificates must be accompanied by a certified translation into Italian.

Italy eases restrictions for UK travelers

The UK is now in the List D. There is no need for the self isolation period anymore if passengers have been in United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (including Gibraltar, the Isle of Man, the Channel Islands and British bases on the island of Cyprus and excluding territories not belonging to the European continent) in the last 14 days, as far as passengers have a:

1. Certificate of vaccination or
2. SARS-COV-2 Infection recovery Certification

In addition to a negative test – valid tests are Molecular test (also known as RNA or PCR test) or Antigen test (also known as rapid test) – done in the forty-eight hours prior to entry into the Country.

A dPLF (Digital passengers Locator Form) and a self-declaration form are still required, depending on the specific requirements of the airport of destination.
